The BMW iX is one of the German brand’s flagship models, which is why it forgoes BMW’s typical number-based naming system (like X5 and X7). It’s an electric SUV, but there’s a selection of powertrains and trim levels.

The BMW iX has proven to be a reliable electric vehicle so far thanks to its robust engineering and advanced technology. Owners praise its performance, build quality and strong safety features.

Electric cars also feature fewer moving parts than petrol and diesel cars, so they tend to need less maintenance. The iX also gets regular software updates to keep the in-car tech running tip-top.

How much does the BMW iX cost to run?

There’s no denying that the iX is less efficient than many smaller electric cars, but the reality is still that it’ll cost you less to run than a similarly large petrol-powered SUV.

BMW claims over 380 miles of range with the biggest battery, and even in real-world conditions you’ll likely get over 300 miles.

Who is the BMW iX suitable for?

A used BMW iX makes a lot of sense for anybody who typically drives a large SUV, including company car drivers and business owners. It combines a premium experience with less-than-premium running costs.

Other premium electric SUVs include the Mercedes EQE SUV, Jaguar I-Pace and Audi Q8 e-tron (formerly Audi e-tron).

How much will the iX cost?

When it launched, BMW sold the iX for a touch under £70,000, and it continues to sell for around that today. Top-spec M60 models get closer to £125,000.

Thankfully, used BMW iX models are now nearing the £40,000 mark, which makes them much more appealing to buy.

Is the BMW iX full electric?

Yes, the BMW iX is an electric-only model.

The xDrive40 (326hp) model has a 76.6kWh battery, and the faster models are equipped with a bigger 111.5kWh battery – the xDrive50 (523hp) and M60 (619hp).

What does iX mean in BMW?

In the case of this model, the ‘i’ refers to the fact that it’s an electric car, and the ‘X’ means that it’s an SUV. Being BMW’s flagship electric SUV, it doesn’t carry a number like other SUVs in the range (like the iX3).

Is the BMW iX 40 worth buying?

The BMW iX xDrive40 comes with all the kit you get with more powerful models, but a smaller battery capable of a claimed 257 miles. Unless you plan on doing lots of especially long journeys, the iX 40 model makes a lot of sense.

What is the real range of iX?

BMW claims 257 miles for the smaller battery, which is likely closer to 200 real-world, and the 380 miles from the bigger battery is probably closer to 320.

Despite having the bigger battery fitted, the performance-spec M60 car has a slightly lower range of 348 miles, or around 300 miles in real-world conditions. That’s the trade-off for a mighty 619hp.
