What is the BMW X4 M40i?

BMW’s fastest performance cars wear the M badge, and the X4 M is the quickest version of this car you can get – but it’s extremely expensive.

Enter the M40i, which sits between the range-topper and the desirable M Sport models, with its smooth and refined 3.0-litre straight-six engine.

You’ll be limited to second-generation G02 models built after 2018, but although they’re still quite new, you can get one for less than many new hatchbacks.

What are the BMW X4 M40i specs?

The M40i badge refers to two things – it’s partly a trim level, but partly an engine option. That means there’s only one on offer.

It’s a 3.0-litre straight-six with 360hp and an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which gets it to 62mph in 4.9 seconds.

Newer models come with a mild hybrid system to save emissions, but if you need greater fuel economy, consider this car’s diesel equivalent, the M40d.

Like M Sport models, the X4 M40i gets a sporty bodykit with large alloys and distinctive exhaust pipes. There’s a mix of chrome and glossy black around the exterior to give it a more premium edge.

Other equipment includes adaptive LED headlights, three-zone climate control, cruise control, all-around parking sensors, a reversing camera and heated front seats. The M40i also gets a large touchscreen infotainment system and, for newer models, a digital instrument cluster.

Plenty of optional extras are available, including laser headlights that give you even more visibility, a built-in webcam, a heads-up display and gesture control for the media system.

Where the X4 M40i sits in the BMW range

A used BMW X4 M40i is about as premium as you can get in the X4 range, apart from the exclusive X3 M model. The M40d diesel variant is also a worthy option for those looking for more reasonable running costs.

Top-spec M Sport models are very popular, and come with more economical 2.0-litre engines. There’s also an M Sport X trim with slightly more equipment.
