This battery powers an electric motor that drives the car. When the battery is low, an engine kicks in to either drive the car or recharge the battery, offering greater efficiency and flexibility.
There are some very distinct differences between a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), Self-charging hybrid (HEV) and mild hybrid (MHEV).
PHEVs have a larger battery that can be charged by plugging into an electrical outlet. They can run on electric power alone for short distances, and switch to a petrol or diesel engine when the battery is depleted.
HEVs combine an engine with an electric motor. The battery is charged through regenerative braking and the running engine, but they cannot be plugged in. HEVs use an electric motor to assist the engine, improving overall fuel efficiency.
MHEVs use a smaller battery and an electric motor to assist the engine. The electric motor provides extra power during acceleration and helps with fuel-saving features like start-stop systems, and in some models, it can power the wheels for a few hundred metres
PHEVs can often offer lower running costs compared to traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) cars.
The primary savings come from reduced fuel consumption, as PHEVs can run on electric power alone for short distances, which is cheaper than gasoline.
Charging the battery at home is a lot cheaper than using a public charger, so it’s best to keep that in mind.
Maintenance costs can also be lower because the electric motor reduces wear and tear on the engine. However, PHEVs may have higher initial purchase prices and potential costs for home charging equipment, but if you buy a used one, the costs will soon become much more palatable.
Additionally, the overall savings depend on driving habits, electricity rates, and fuel prices, but overall they’re going to be cheaper for daily driving, especially in electric mode.
